First Alert Weather: A warm up as winter approaches
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Milder weather and more clouds will be the weather theme for the rest of tonight and into the weekend. The next big rain and possible thunderstorm chance occur just before Christmas Eve.
FRIDAY: Temperatures will rise into the 70s as dry high pressure transitions to our east, opening the door for a nice little warm up through the weekend
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: Ironically, winter officially begins at 12:11pm Saturday - but temperatures will feel more like the first day of spring. Saturday's highs soar into the mid 70's with highs near 80 by Sunday. Saturday night and Sunday night lows will only dip into the low 60's. Rain chance is slim Saturday but isolated showers are more likely with increasing clouds late Sunday. Unseasonably warm!!!
MONDAY: A potent storm with a trailing cold front could bring a lot of showers and possibly some thunderstorms to the area prior to Christmas. There could be a small risk of a strong or severe thunderstorms with damaging winds. Ahead of the front highs will reach the low 70's.
CHRISTMAS EVE AND CHRISTMAS DAY: Some lingering showers are possible Tuesday morning with clearing during the afternoon. Cold high pressure building from the west will drop afternoon highs into the mid 50's both days. Christmas Day will be sunny. Lows Tuesday and Wednesday night will be in the low 30's. Cold as it should be for Santa!
WHITE CHRISTMAS WATCH: Though temperatures are likely to trend toward cooler levels for Christmas Eve into Christmas Day, the chance of a White Christmas is near 0% this year. The chance of a White Christmas in any given year in southeastern North Carolina is 1 - 2%.
