A soldier from Arizona was among six troops based at Fort Riley, KS, killed in a helicopter crash Sunday in Afghanistan, Department of Defense officials said.

The casualty was identified as 35-year-old Chief Warrant Officer 2 Joshua B. Silverman.

Records searched by CBS 5 News listed Silverman as having a Flagstaff address from the late 1990s to early 2000s. His parents at one time lived in Scottsdale.

In addition, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Randy L. Billings, 34, of Heavener, OK, and Sgt. Peter C. Bohler, 29, of Willow Spring, NC, died from injuries received in the accident in Now Bahar.

They were assigned to the 3rd Assault Helicopter Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley.

The others killed were:

  • Sgt. 1st Class Omar W. Forde, 28, of Marietta, GA, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, at Fort Riley.
  • Staff Sgt. Jesse L. Williams, 30, of Elkhart, IN, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, Regimental Support Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, at Vilseck, Germany.
  • Spc. Terry K. D. Gordon, 22, of Shubuta, MS, assigned to 1st Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, at Fort Riley.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer expressed her condolences in a statement:

"Today, the hearts and prayers of all Arizonans are with the family of Chief Warrant Officer Two Joshua B. Silverman, a U.S. Army soldier killed this week in the line of duty. On Tuesday, CW2 Silverman was one of six soldiers who died of injuries sustained as the result of a helicopter crash in Now Bahar, Afghanistan.

"CW2 Silverman, 35, of Scottsdale, was serving his country in support of Operation Enduring Freedom at the time of the incident. He had been assigned to the 3rd Assault Helicopter Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, based at Fort Riley, Kansas.

"Our eternal gratitude is with CW2 Silverman and his fellow fallen heroes whose lives were taken in the crash, and our deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones in mourning. Their deaths are a solemn reminder of the daily dangers faced by our men and women in uniform, who selflessly serve and sacrifice to keep their neighbors safe and our nation free.

"In honor of Arizona hero CW2 Joshua B. Silverman, I have ordered that flags at all state buildings be lowered from sunrise to sunset tomorrow, December 20, 2013, as well as on the day of his interment, for which services are pending"
