LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
It's been said that honesty is always the best policy, and perhaps no one knows that better than a Las Vegas cab driver.
Veteran taxi driver Gerardo Gamboa, of Yellow Checker Star, said he thought a brown paper bag found left in the back seat of his cab Monday night contained chocolate. He opened the bag and was shocked to find six bundles of $100 bills, totaling $300,000.
"All I wanted to do was just call my dispatcher and return it, and this is the only chance I have to show cab drivers in Las Vegas are not bad people," Gamboa said.
He handed the money over to the cab company's office, who contacted police. Investigators, along with the help of a casino, tracked down the man to whom the money belonged - a professional poker player, who did not want his identity revealed. The cash was then returned to its rightful owner.
"He was grateful," said the taxi company's Field Operation Manager Joel Willden. "Maybe a little more embarrassed than anything. I mean, he left $300,000 in a cab, but he was an awesome guy."
Gamboa, who has been a cabbie for 32 years, was named driver of the year by his company, but on Friday his integrity literally paid off. The poker player awarded Gamboa $10,000, during a private meeting at the cab company's office.
"I don't care from $10 to higher," Gamboa said. "My dignity is not for sale."
