19,000 Tennesseans will lose unemployment benefits immediately

(WMC-TV) - More than one million Americans will be cut off from federal unemployment benefits after a program, which was signed into law in 2008, expired Saturday.

Roughly 19,000 Tennesseans will lose benefits immediately, according to a map on the Washington Post's website. During the first half of 2014, 31,000 more residents in Tennessee— a state with 8.5 percent unemployment— will lose benefits.

Congress extended the federal aid to the long-term jobless 11 times but an extra lifeline was not included in the latest budget deal.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers proposed a short-term extension for three months, but many republicans are already promising to oppose it.

"If people think we need two years of unemployment insurance they should come forward and say, 'We want to raise the taxes and contributions of employers and employees,' " said Kentucky Senator (R) Rand Paul.

The extension proposal will make it to the floor of the senate, but not until Congress returns to work next month.

"When Congress comes back to work, their first order of business should be making this right," said President Barack Obama last week at his year-end news conference.

But Obama has no quick fix. Click here to read more about losing unemployment benefits.
