(WMC-TV) - The man who died during a standoff with police reportedly did so as the result of a fire that could have been started by the MPD TACT Unit.

According to an autopsy report released by the Shelby County medical examiner, Aaron Dumas, 32, died of smoke inhalation. But the manner of death "could not be determined."

In October, Dumas was wanted for the double shooting of a brother and sister. When police tracked him down, he barricaded himself into a house on Worthington Street.

During the standoff, two TACT officers were shot and the unit was unable to coax Dumas out of the house.

A chemical agent was deployed inside of the house. Shortly afterward, the house became engulfed in flames.

When the fire was put out, Dumas was found dead in the bathtub, submerged under water.

The medical examiner found thermal injuries on his head, body, and extremities, along with soot in his airway.

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong admits that after two officers were shot while trying to serve the arrest warrant on Dumas, the incorrect type of chemical agent was shot into the house and could have started the fire.

"We've corrected all that going forward," said Director Armstrong. "It's going to be almost impossible to make that mistake again."

Both TACT officers who were shot in the standoff were treated at The MED and have since been released.
