New plan underway to decrease commute time on dangerous road

(WMC-TV) - One of the busiest stretches of roadway in North Mississippi could soon be seeing a little relief. A new plan to sync traffic lights on Goodman Road in DeSoto County is underway.

Transportation officials insist this is about public safety. Motorists should not expect to fly down an already dangerous Goodman Road, but they may not spend as much time in traffic.

On any given day traffic and congestion can be a nightmare.

Between traffic and brake lights, the color red dominates the corridor—except for occasional blue lights after an accident.

"I try to avoid it. I try to use Church Road as much as possible," said driver Mark Duncan.

State transportation officials announced they are moving forward with plans to synchronize traffic lights on the state highway this week.

"All of the signals will have sensors, which detect the volume of traffic," said Mike Target with the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

Action News 5's Michael Clark drove from the beginning of Horn Lake to the end of Olive Branch. He stopped three times in Horn Lake, five times in Southaven, and seven times in Olive Branch. It took him 40 minutes to drive less than 20 miles.

Not everyone thinks synching lights will be the answer.

"It may help a little bit, but I still think it will be very busy," said driver Russell Walters.

Accidents also cause congestion, so the state will add about 60 cameras. That way first responders know where wrecks are and can respond quicker.

DeSoto County leaders met with Mississippi transportation officials Thursday. Construction should start this January 2015 and may be finished in two years.
