Dougherty County Schools attendance down on frigid day

Officials at Dougherty County Schools said attendance was down system-wide Tuesday, as frigid temperatures ruled the day's weather.

Public Information Director R. D. Harter said DCSS experienced lower than normal attendance by 10 to 15 percent.

While he said that parents or guardians must make the decision if a student is to miss classes, he noted that the vast majority of absences today are likely unexcused, meaning students cannot make up missed work for credit.

DCSS officials made extra efforts for buses Tuesday morning as well, replacing batteries and keeping engines warm to make sure schedules ran as planned.

Wednesday's weather outlook for South Georgia is likely a welcome relief for many, with temperatures breaking out of a below-freezing cold snap that gripped the majority of the nation.
