Conyers PD: spike in motorists crashes along HWY 138/Georgia 20

The Conyers Police Department reported that 33 accidents took place along parts of Highway 138/Georgia 20 in Dec. 2013.

Officer Kim Lucas told CBS Atlanta News, that amount is more than a third of all the accidents reported on the city's public roadways during that same period.

"The majority of the accidents are following too closely and failing to yield the right of way," said Lucas.

Denise Morse told CBS Atlanta News that just today, she narrowly avoided a crash near the area when another motorist decided to make up the rules of the road at will.

"This car just shot across in front of me and got off the exit. It's a bunch of ice spots out there, people, they don't take in consideration the weather," said Morse.

It's that lack of thinking that police says is a recipe for something more tragic here.

"You think you might be able to speed through that red light or yellow light. But it's better to be safe than sorry," said Lucas.

Lucas said the increase in holiday traffic likely added to the overall increase in accidents here.

However, they want to remind motorists that HWY138 / Georgia 20 is the main road through town, so it's often very busy and should be driven cautiously year round.

"We want people to use due regard and be alert of your surroundings. Do not be so distracted. No texting, no phone calls [or] things of that nature," said Lucas.
