City leaders battle over Tourist Development Zone money

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - The Shelby County Commission will vote Wednesday on a resolution to capture Tourist Development Zone dollars that are now designated to be used by the City of Memphis to develop the Mid-South Fairgrounds.

For the first time, city leaders are speaking up about where the funds are going.

Commissioner Steve Basar says if the money goes to the city, it will divert $2 million per year away from schools.

The city contends the county will get money for schools either way.

The state allows either a county or city to apply for TDZ dollars. In this case, the city had already applied to turn part of the Fairgrounds into a sports complex.

Basar says the development would compete with nearby Cooper-Young and Overton Square entertainment districts, but the city contends it will enhance tourism in those areas.
