Target to close Memphis store, offer credit monitoring as breach worsens

(WMC-TV) - Target will offer free credit monitoring to virtually anyone who's ever set foot in one of its stores, now that its data breach has compromised a third of America's shopping population.

Friday, the Minneapolis-based retailer revealed the data breach that affected some 40 million customers nationwide after Black Friday now may have compromised as many as 110 million.

In addition to customer payment card data, Target admitted the breach also grabbed some customers' mailing addresses, e-mail addresses and phone numbers.

"I know that it is frustrating for our guests to learn that this information was taken," said Target Chairman and CEO Gregg Steinhafel. "We are truly sorry they are having to endure this."

Steinhafel announced Target will provide one free year of a credit monitoring service and identity theft protection to "all guests who shopped our U.S. stores." Customers will have three months to apply for the service, which should be available soon right here.

In the wake of the breach, Target also announced Friday it will close eight stores across the country May 3, including its location at 7697 Winchester Rd. in the Southwind area.

Spokesperson Luz Varela said the Winchester Rd. location will be "...closed as a result of seeing several years of decreasing profitability."

"That breach of security, sales...I think it's overall affected that," said Winchester Rd. shopper Neamo Woodfork of Hickory Hill. "People just probably are a little reluctant on shopping here."

The other stores closing are in West Dundee, IL.; Las Vegas, NV.; North Las Vegas, NV.; Duluth, GA.; Orange Park, FL.; Middletown, OH.; and Trotwood, OH.

Target's media personnel said team members at the closing stores will be offered opportunities to transfer to similar positions at other locations.

The Action News 5 Investigators were the first to report Target may have violated payment card industry standards in how it secured its customers information -- and that the breach occurred at the retailer's point-of-sale terminals.
