(WMC-TV) - I want to use my time this week to thank everyone who came forward to help with the effort to provide warm coats for Mid-South school children.

It's understandable when school is canceled because the roads are too dangerous for children to get to class. It's certainly not OK when school administrators feel compelled to cancel classes because their students don't have warm coats, but that happened here this week. The principal at one Memphis elementary school estimated that about a third of her students did not come to school dressed for the extremely cold temperatures we had at the beginning of the week.

Thanks to Wendi Thomas of the Commercial Appeal and the Common Ground organization. She got our attention on this issue, and also a big thank you to the YWCA and to all of you who made the effort to donate a warm coat for a child or gave cash to help buy new coats. The Mid-South is warmer place this week because of you.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
