City begins demolition of 51 buildings in Southeast Memphis

(WMC-TV) – The city of Memphis is starting demolition on 51 buildings that are part of the Walter Simmons property on Knight Arnold Road.

The project began on Wednesday. Leaders say it is expected to take 90 days and when it is finished 34 acres will be cleared.

The Memphis Housing Authority transferred the property to the city in 2010 with future plans for a city complex.

Action News 5's Michael Clark is working to learn more about the project and how it might impact people and businesses in the area. He will have more tonight at 6 o'clock.
