Another meeting held to discuss possible closure of 13 schools

(WMC-TV) – Parents are getting another chance Friday evening to learn why 13 schools are scheduled to close around Shelby County.

The meeting held Thursday night was, at times, heated and personal. Parents, students, and neighbors held signs, cheered, clapped, as they made their cases.

"Our children go to Westhaven because they love their school, the leadership, the teachers, the quality instruction that they receive daily," said one parent who attended Thursday's meeting.

A Northside student agreed, "The professors are like our parents. They exemplify a genuine concern for our academics as well as social and emotional success."

Shelby County Schools have 13 schools planned to close in Southwest and Northwest Memphis.

The district blames low enrollment numbers, population shifts, and Fs on the state report card as reasons for the closures.

The superintendent made his own passionate plea to those in attendance

"I'm challenging everybody in here that has all those emotions and cares so much about these schools give us a plan or give us some suggestions for a plan to not close these schools," said Supt. Dorsey Hopson.

Additional meetings will be held in the coming weeks before final decisions are made about which schools will close.
