(WMC-TV) - Memphis Police Department charged a man who they say beat a woman with a hammer and then tried to kill her by burning her alive.

Dino Martin, 39, is charged with attempted murder and aggravated arson.

According to police, Martin got into a fight with the mother of his 8-year-old son. During the fight, he reportedly hit her in the face with a hammer. After she locked herself in the bathroom, police say Martin lit the bathroom door and carpet on fire with lighter fluid.

When the fired died down, she ran to the neighbor's house with her son and locked the door. She told police that Martin began breaking the neighbor's glass door with the hammer.

The victim was taken to The MED. When police went to her home on Semmes Street to gather some of her belongings, they say they found Martin inside her house.

Police contacted the MPD TACT unit, but before they arrived, police say Martin barricaded himself inside the house and refused to come out. Investigators say he then set the house on fire and tried to run away.

Martin was arrested, then taken to The MED where he is being treated for smoke inhalation. He is in non-critical condition and charged with three counts of aggravated arson and one count of attempted first degree murder.
