BARTLETT, TN -
(WMC-TV) - A sign posted in front of a church is stirring controversy. It is part of one man's search for justice after an alleged attack.
Pat Winstead is a man who does not give up. He claims he and his family were assaulted a year ago.
"There are a handful of witnesses who could have seen the assault," said Winstead.
He put a sign up on Stage Road, which is in Bartlett across from Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He says he and his wife and son were manhandled at the church by an off-duty deputy and security guard last January.
"Her assaulted her twisted her into a pretzel," said Winstead.
Winstead says it started with a traffic jam on Stage Road caused by the people hired by the church for a funeral. Winstead says he got out of his car to see what the backup was about and that is when he was assaulted and taken to the back part of the church.
His wife and son soon followed. His son called 911.
The call recorded the child saying, " We're on Highway 64 at a church with a funeral. They arrested my dad, and they're hitting and beating him."
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office investigated the case after Winstead filed a complaint, but officials decided the deputy did not violate procedure.
Winstead says he got permission from the property owner to put up a sign, and he says he followed Bartlett's sign ordinance.
The sign posted Monday asks for witnesses to come forward, because Winstead is trying to make a criminal and civil case
