GERMANTOWN, TN -
(WMC-TV) - "You didn't get any diamonds?" one of the men involved in a smash and grab theft at a Wolfchase Mall jewelry store was overheard saying into a cell phone during the theft.
Police recovered a cell phone, as well as several other key pieces of evidence that are currently being reviewed as the five or six men responsible remain on the loose.
At 7:43 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, Memphis police were called to Reeds Jewelers at Wolfchase Mall. Police say a group of men smashed open a glass display counter, stole 65 Rolex watches valued at a total of $715,000, and took off.
Three employees, who were in the store at the time, heard a very loud bang, at which point they dropped to the ground. When they looked up, they recalled seeing a group of five or six men dressed in black hitting the display case. A witness, who was in another jewelry store at the time, saw the men taking jewelry out of the display cases and running out of the store toward a nearby Sears before splitting into two groups and leaving through two separate exit doors. The witness says the hood slipped off of one man's head, thus giving the witness a brief glimpse at his head and face area.
Before leaving, one of the men dropped a cell phone, which police recovered and tagged as evidence.
Police also recovered two hammers from the scene of the crime.
According to video surveillance from the mall security system, five men were seen running out of the mall at dock four. Three of them got into a gray minivan and two got into a red sedan, then sped from the scene.
Investigators also reviewed video surveillance from Reeds Jewelry store that showed the theft.
On Sunday night at 11:43 p.m., Memphis police were called back to Wolfchase Mall. An employee for the contractor hired to landscape the area around the mall was sweeping and blowing the parking lot when he discovered more evidence, believed to be used in the theft, that had been thrown into the bushes.
Police recovered a hammer with duct tape wrapped around the handle, a tan/white glove, and a tan t-shirt from the bushes near Tandy Leather. Officers canvassed the area nearby but did not find any other evidence or surveillance cameras in the immediate vicinity.
