MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Shelby County Schools is changing the optional school application process, due to low temperatures and a wind chill advisory.

SCS will be issuing "place-holder tickets" for the bar-coded applications Thursday through Sunday. The applications will then be available for those with the tickets beginning at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, January 27.

A news release issued by SCS says, "Superintendent Dorsey Hopson recognizes it is not safe for parents to camp out in the current weather conditions and, therefore, has adjusted the process."

Parents can come to the Board of Education at 160 S. Hollywood Street during the following times to pick up a place-holder ticket:

• Thursday, January 23, until 6 p.m.

• Friday, January 24, 6 a.m. – 6 p.m.

• Saturday, January 25, 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.

• Sunday, January 26, 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Deborah McLaughlin was among the parents waking up inside a tent Thursday morning for the sake of optional schools.

"This is kind of ridiculous," she said with a laugh. "They need more schools that are better instead of a select few."

She was relieved SCS later devised a plan that had campers packing it in.

"When we looked at the weather and saw the conditions, the wind chill factor and all, we determined we needed to do something in a different manner," said SCS Optional Program Director Linda Sklar.

The district re-evaluates the optional application process annually and highly discourages camping out. They say most people who meet the requirements get into their schools of choice.
