Search for TBI’s most wanted suspect concerns residents

(WMC-TV) – West Tennessee residents and business owners are concerned for their safety after Wednesday's all day manhunt for TBI's most wanted suspect, Stephen Melton, did not result in his capture.

Tipton and Lauderdale County deputies are urging residents to keep a keen eye out and to keep their doors locked because they fear Melton is still in the area.

"I want all the citizens of Tipton County to know that if they see him, call 911. He's supposed to be armed and dangerous. He's listed that way on the most wanted list. Do not approach him, call authorities and we'll be there," said Tipton County Sheriff Pancho Chumley.

Debbie Simonton owns a salon in Covington. The first thing she did Wednesday was lock her shop doors.

"Around here, there are open fields behind me," she said. "So, yeah, we were scared ... Anybody who comes up we weren't used to seeing or knew they didn't need a haircut, we didn't let them in."

On January 11, Melton was arrested at his home in Lauderdale County. As deputies searched his house, he sat outside in the deputy's SUV. That's when deputies say he kicked an 11-inch hole through the Plexiglass and stole the car.

Later that day, the SUV was found, but Melton is still on the run.
