MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A 45-year-old mother and business owner was found dead inside her Cordova nail and spa salon Monday, according to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office public information officer.

Crews investigated the shooting in a parking lot of the strip mall, as well as inside the business, which is located at 1658 Appling Road.

Shelby County Sheriff's Investigators say 45-year-old Van Nguyen, the owner, was shot and left to die.

A few hours later, Memphis police officers spotted suspect Jesus Perez's silver SUV on Interstate 40. They followed him to a Shell station at Appling Road and Reese Road. As police moved in on him, the 51-year-old took his own life.

Investigators say this was a domestic homicide and that Nguyen and Perez were once married, but now estranged.

Friends describe Nguyen as a wonderful mother and friend.

As cleaning crews did their job inside Nail and Spa Salon Tuesday, friends outside remembered Nguyen.

"I'll miss her coming to the mailbox and waving through the window," said Eugenia White, who has worked next door for nine years.

White says Nguyen was a hard worker who was always the first to arrive at the salon and the last to leave.

"She was very energetic, flamboyant, outgoing," said White. "Wasn't scared to speak her mind, very nice."

According to her friends, Nguyen leaves behind two daughters and a young son.
