MFD puts out fire at high-rise apartment building

(WMC-TV) - Memphis Fire Department responded to a high-rise apartment fire at 3155 Sharpe Avenue, where at least one person was treated for smoke inhalation.

When the fire was reported, smoke was showing at John Madison Exum Towers.  Fire officials confirm that the fire began on a 6th floor balcony of the building, where firefighters found smoldering clothes.

According to Action News 5 crews, three ambulances were at the scene.  One person was treated for smoke inhalation.  The other ambulances were called to help get some of the residents out of the cold.

Fire crews have ventilation fans running inside the 6th floor and are working to clear the smoke.

The building was evacuated for a short time, but floor 6 is the only one still evacuated.

The fire was contained just before noon Thursday.  There is no official cause of how the fire started.
