Standoff in Montgomery County ends without injury - WMC Action News 5 - Memphis, Tennessee

Standoff ends in Montgomery Co.

MONTGOMERY CO., GA (WTOC) -

A standoff in Montgomery County with a former police officer ended without injuries Saturday night.

Montgomery County Chief Investigator Justin Fountain told WTOC he and another deputy went to a call on Sawmill Road around 6:45 p.m. because of a domestic dispute.

"When we got there, the woman ran to us for help and the man appeared to be approaching spots where weapons could be, so we backed up and got the woman to a safe distance," he said.

From there, they called for more officers and attempted to convince the man, Tony Phillips, to come outside unarmed. But Phillips, a former Vidalia police officer, refused.

Deputies who knew Phillips knew he had enough firearms to stay barricaded in the house.

Georgia State Patrol SWAT Team went in and used tear gas around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday.

According to Fountain, Phillips was free on bond from aggravated sodomy charges dating back to December 2011 in Treutlen County.

Immediately after his arrest, he was taken to a hospital for evaluation, then to the Treutlen County jail. Charges are pending.
