Son attempts to rescue man killed in Haywood Co. house fire

(WMC-TV) – Neal Bain just turned 81 on Monday. His family is grieving his death after his house caught fire late Tuesday afternoon in rural Haywood County.

Bain, his wife, and son were all inside their house on Tibbs Forked-Deer Road when the house caught fire.

Family members say Neal Bain was in a hospital bed in the living room and his son tried to rescue him from the burning home but was unsuccessful.

Mrs. Bain and her son were both taken to The MED burn unit where they are recovering. Family members say they have burns to their face and other parts of their body.

Family members are not exactly sure what caused the fire but say Mrs. Bain lit an oil lamp in the house because their power was out Tuesday. They say they are not sure if the lamp exploded or what happened.

Fire officials say it could be several days before an exact cause of the fire is released.

"My uncle was a farmer. He was 81 years old the day before he died, and he'd been in ill health for a long time," said Bain's nephew Jack Walden Jr. "My aunt and their son Paul were very faithful to take care of him at home. He was pretty close to being bed bound."

Family members say the Bain's power had been out for several hours before the fire started.
