(WMC-TV) - Madison County Sheriff David Woolfork submitted a letter of retirement Wednesday afternoon.

The letter comes after news that Woolfork was to be temporarily suspended after a judge granted the county's request to oust him.

In the letter announcing his retirement, Woolfork said, "It is with mixed emotions that I submit this letter of retirement. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Madison County as your sheriff for almost 20 years."

In December 2013, Woolfork turned himself into Chester County Jail after being indicted by a Madison County grand jury. WBBJ-TV reports the arrest stemmed from a domestic disturbance that reportedly happened in October at the home of Woolfork's former mistress, deputy Sharon Sangster.

Sangster filed an order of protection against the sheriff, according to WBBJ-TV, which was granted on October 23, 2013.

Since the domestic disturbance accusations surfaced, two more Madison County deputies have filed sexual harassment complaints against the sheriff.
