Charter school accused of unethical recruiting

Posted: Updated:
(WMC-TV) - While Gordon Elementary's enrollment has eroded over the years, enrollment at nearby charter schools Klondike Preparatory Academy and Humes Prep is on the rise.

Parents, who are already opposed to the proposed closure of Gordon, now face new issues.

Some parents claim they were given false information during registration in an effort to recruit their kids.

"My child isn't in this neighborhood -- I transferred here because I know it was a good school," notes one Gordon Elementary parent.

In a letter sent to school leaders, one grandmother wrote that she was told "that Gordon was only going to have kindergarten, third, and fourth grade this year."

The grandmother claimed the letter said her granddaughter would have to go to Klondike if she is pre-K.

In a second letter obtained by Action News 5, a mother claimed a woman told her, "They don't have fifth grade at Gordon anymore they will have to go to Humes."

However, Gordon remains a pre-K through 5th grade school.

Shelby County School Board member Shante Avant believes there is no place for such tactics.

"Anytime parents are recruited based on fear, not facts, I think we go into ethical issues," said Avant.
