Bicycle archway installed as tribute at Overton Park entrance

(WMC-TV) - One bike at a time, crews are creating a gateway to Overton Park.

The artwork's sculptor, Tyler French, says the colorful bicycle arch will sit at the corner of Sam Cooper Boulevard and East Parkway, symbolizing the park's past and celebrating its existence for future Memphians.

"Back in the 70s, Interstate 40 was going to go through the park and the Supreme Court ruled it couldn't go through the park," said French.
Donated from various cycle shops around town, workers plan to have about 200 to 300 bicycles, weighing in at approximately 2,500 lbs, on the archway when it is completed. French says there is roughly 4,500 lbs of structure steel in the arch itself and 6,500 lbs of steel in the columns.

"We wanted to build an icon and sort of a tribute to all of the efforts to make the greenline so well received in this city," noted French.

The completed project is expected to be put on the columns next Tuesday morning, with the new park gateway and new pavilion open by March.

"It has really taken on a much stronger community element than I would have ever imagined," said French.
