MY TURN: Tennessee Promise

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam this week unveiled a plan to provide free tuition to all of the two-year state community colleges and technology centers.

He's calling his plan Tennessee Promise, and the name is aptly chosen. It's become abundantly clear that one reason more companies are not relocating here is because our workforce is not educated enough for the jobs they would like to create. And we're not just talking about four-year college degrees.

There are many great jobs that are available to those who earn two-year certificates or degrees. It's very hard to argue against a plan that makes education available to people who need it. Still, the governor's plan has critics including Congressman Steve Cohen. Haslam wants to fund Tennessee Promise by making an adjustment to the Hope Lottery scholarships. As always, the devil is in the details, but let's hope that our state lawmakers can have an honest debate on this one in way that furthers the cause of education in Tennessee.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email or call 800-465-1210.
