MDOT issues warning about icy roads, prompts more school closings

(WMC-TV) – Winter weather moved into parts of the Mid-South early Wednesday morning. Parts of Memphis are seeing flurries, but North Mississippi is the hardest hit with freezing rain causing icy road conditions.

Around 4:30 a.m. Mississippi Department of Transportation warned people about icy bridges in Benton, Marshall and Desoto Counties. Find MDOT's interactive road condition map here:

Action News 5's Michael Clark is in Oxford, Mississippi and says freezing rain and sleet started falling there just after midnight. Around 4:30 a.m. he reported ice starting to collect on metal objects. The roads in Oxford were wet and the concern is that roadways and bridges will start freezing over.

Amy Speropoulos is tracking the winter weather in Southaven and says that traffic is moving smoothly as of 5 a.m. She did not see any apparent trouble spots, even though MDOT has warned drivers of possible icy conditions. There are no snow covered roads, but the roads are wet which brings a possibility for black ice.

Some schools in Mississippi have canceled classes for Wednesday, February 12, including Desoto County Schools. Find the latest school and business closing list here:
