(WMC-TV) - Walmart started reevaluating policies after police say a half dozen assault rifles were stolen from its Cordova Supercenter.

Walmart told police the rifles disappeared during a middle-of-the-night shoplifting. Employees and others were in the 24-hour store early Thursday morning, but the four crooks got away.

According to an incident report, what investigators describe as six "assault" rifles were swiped from one of the glass displays, plus a seventh weapon.

Police identify one of the stolen weapons as the same model Bushmaster brand rifle used in the 2012 Sandy Hook School massacre in Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six adults were murdered.

"I have a child and don't want anything to happen to my child, and that means guns are just going to be out on the street," said resident Nikenya Rudd.

Julie Hill co-owns Arms Fair, which is located not far from the Cordova Walmart.

She believes the weapons would be detected if the crooks attempted to sell them at a gun or pawn shop.

"If it's a stolen gun and been reported as stolen, then it will come back as such," said Hill. "But selling it on the street to another individual, that's difficult."

Hill says her inventory is well protected during business and beyond.

Meanwhile, it is unclear how the crooks breached the displays at Walmart. A spokesperson said that information is part of the ongoing investigation.

Walmart says each weapon is equipped with a trigger lock that requires a key. There is also surveillance video of the suspects that may be released later.

For now, guns in the store are being kept in a more secure area.
