DeSoto County students will make up snow day on Presidents Day

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Presidents Day usually means a day off for students in DeSoto County. But not this year. Instead, they will be making up for two snow days the district had to take this week.

If the snow days continue due to wintry weather, DeSoto County students could see a shorter summer break, too.

Icy roads this week is the reason kids will be heading to school on Presidents Day, instead of having the day off. Wintry weather also wiped out an off day planned for the Monday after Easter.

The school board approved those days off to be used as make-up days. But there is only one approved day left.

"Winter is not over," said Van Alexander with DeSoto County Schools. "If we have more bad weather that causes us to miss school, then of course, board has to decide on more days."

If Mother Nature causes more snow days, a few things that will be considered include Saturday school, a shortened spring break, or even a summer cut short.

By law, Mississippi students must spend 180 days in school. And now, Presidents Day will be one of them.

So, Monday will be a normal day for DeSoto County students. Shelby County Schools are closed.

The DeSoto County School Board is already working on approving a schedule with built-in snow days for next year.
