A community is still reeling from the news that a well-known couple's son-in-law is accused of murdering them with an explosive.

Richard Parker faces two counts of premeditated first-degree murder in the deaths of his wife's parents, Jon and Marion Setzer.

Parker lived on the same property as the Setzers, just yards away from the explosion Monday in Wilson County.

"I spent some time with the man. No red flags ever went up about his character," said next-door neighbor Landon Thompson.

The Setzers leave behind four children and many friends.

"I tend to describe them as ordinarily extraordinary," said the Rev. Mike Ripski, pastor at First United Methodist Church in Lebanon.

The couple lost a 3-year-old son to a vicious dog attack in 1978 and spent the next several years counseling other parents who endured similar tragedies.

"Some people may go through a tragedy like that and would become bitter, angry, depressed. But it seemed to make them into persons who were just very sensitive and compassionate and caring. They were just very beautiful people," Ripski said.

"I just feel so much sadness for the family. What are those kids going to do now?" Thompson said.

This is not the first time Parker has been in trouble with the law.

Parker had money issues in the 1990s, so he was accused of setting a home he had built on fire.

Giles County deputies said Parker underbid on a log cabin he built for another family, so he torched it.

Firefighters put out the flames. And authorities said Parker then set fire to it again.

He was arrested on charges of arson and sentenced to probation.

In the murders of Jon and Marion Setzer, Parker is due to make his first court appearance Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been set for Jon and Marion Setzer.
