Hunting a fishing could become a right - WMC Action News 5 - Memphis, Tennessee

Amendment could make hunting/fishing a right

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Hunting and fishing in Mississippi is legally considered a privilege. That could change in November, when a constitutional amendment is placed on the ballot.

Sportsmen, in-state and out-of-state, enjoy fishing and hunting almost every month of the year in Mississippi. Some people don't really understand the need for any change.

If a majority of citizens vote yes, Mississippi will join 17 others states in the country that make hunting and fishing a right.

"It's a natural resource especially if you own your own property," says Jason Bourgeois, a local fisherman. "I feel like you should have a right to hunt and fish. We pay taxes and I just feel like it should be a right."

If the amendment passes, the state would still have the power to regulate the hunting and fishing industries, and collect fees for licensing.
