Tool alerts W. Tennessee farmer to copper thieves

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) – Eugene Pugh, a farmer in Halls, Tenn., depends on his farm and his equipment to make a living. He says copper theft has become a growing problem on his farm.

Pugh purchased a tool to place on his farm irrigation systems that would alert him when thieves were taking his copper. It's called a WireRat device.

Last week, Pugh's WireRat device alerted him that there was a theft attempt on his equipment.

He went to the site and found three juveniles in the act of stripping the copper from his irrigation pivot.

Pugh held one of the suspects at gunpoint until the sheriff's department got there to arrest the juveniles.

Tonight on Action News 5 at 6, hear from Pugh about just how thankful he is that this device saved him thousands of dollars.
