Police investigate possible burial site in neighborhood

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) - A possible crime scene is located in the middle of an Elizabethtown neighborhood.

Officer Virgil Willoughby of the Elizabethtown Police Department said they received a tip that there may be a body buried in a vacant lot.

Neighbors and a family member said a man by the name of Larry Sherrard used to live on the lot police are investigating. The family member said that Sherrard was recently released from prison and died earlier this month. At this point there is no link between Sherrard and investigation on the property on East Railroad Avenue.

Police said they got the tip last week, but they were slowed down because the weather was bad. They started back up again Wednesday and were able to line up cadaver dogs and ground penetrating radar.

Siobhan Monaco had a front row seat to all the commotion in her neighborhood.

"Last night I talked to somebody who was walking down the street and she told me that they possibly found bones and it really concerns me," said Monaco. The lot being investigated was just two doors down from her.

"Anytime someone reports there is a dead or potential dead body you have to follow," said Officer Willoughby. "That is something we take seriously."

Monaco said she hopes police find out soon so she and her family can feel safer.

"I hope that it's just a prank," said Monaco. "This has turned into a nice neighborhood. It wasn't this good before. I'm hoping that's all it is."

The data collected from the radar during the investigation will be analyzed. If anything shows up, police will dig in the area.
