MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Some schools may be removed from a proposed closure list, much to the delight of parents who protested the plan. Several of the 13 schools slated for closure presented their own plans to try and stay open. Not all are viable, but some may be.

Westhaven Elementary parent, Bridget Bradley, once again showed up at a school board meeting with signs and supporters; she was fighting on behalf of their beloved school.

"I'm overjoyed right now," said Bradley excited that Westhaven may be coming off a proposed closure list. "I always tell people, if you want something done you've got to get out and you got to work for it."

Superintendent Dorsey Hopson said the issue at Westhaven is the poor condition of the building, which could be replaced with a new building that two other nearby schools could also merge into, pending approval by the Shelby County Commission.

"One thing is crystal clear, people love their schools, and we certainly want to take that into consideration," said Hopson.

Other communities were just as passionate about sparing their schools during recent public meetings. But officials say they must deal with the realities of too many under-performing, under-enrolled schools.

"We're at a place where something needs to done to right size the district," noted Kevin Woods, Shelby County Schools Board Chairman.

Alcy Elementary was the only other school that appeared to have a good chance of coming off the chopping block.

Final recommendations regarding proposed school closures will come during next week's board meeting. Meanwhile, rezoning was another big topic tonight. Hundreds of students are facing transfers thanks, in part, to the formation of municipal districts.
