Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - A handgun was discovered at a security checkpoint at Memphis International Airport Thursday just before 5 a.m.

According to Transportation Security Administration (TSA), an unloaded .25 caliber handgun was found in a passenger's carry-on bag.

Airport police were called to confiscate the gun and escort the passenger from the security checkpoint. The passenger was issued a citation.

TSA asked to take this opportunity to remind passengers that firearms may be transported in checked luggage, but they must be in a proper carrying case and unloaded. Passengers hoping to travel with a firearm in checked luggage must also notify the airline prior to the flight. Firearms are not allowed in carry-on bags.
