Shelby County Schools address rezoning issues

(WMC-TV) - Some parents are in the process of deciding whether they want to keep their children in Shelby County Schools. That is because they have an option to send them to municipal schools once they open next semester.

Shelby County Schools Board Member David Pickler says they do not have a set number of how many students will stay with the district, which makes it difficult for board members who are working on rezoning.

During the latest Shelby County Schools work meeting, board members voiced concern for the students who will transfer. They are concerned there may not be room for open enrollment.

Factors such as size, neighborhood rivalries and safety issues are on the mind of Shelby County Schools' superintendent Dorsey Hopson.

"Do you send all the students to Bolton and overcrowd Bolton? The principal is worried about neighborhood rivalries, safety issues," said Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dorsey Hopson.

Board members are also worried about students leaving high performing schools for lower performing schools.

One possible solution on the table is to make Woodstock a high school again. Board member David Pickler believes the community would embrace the idea.

"I believe, while it was many years ago, that Woodstock was a high school," said Pickler. "I'll tell you that the people in that community would embrace it with a fair about of vigor."

Superintendent Dorsey Hopson believes the option would require fast action by the board to make sure it's up and running by the start of the school year.
