Rape suspect charged in second assault case

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Police tied one man to two assault cases. The latest: one victim was walking to school when officials say Kotay Floyd tried to kidnap her.

Floyd is no stranger to 201 Poplar. He has been in and out of jail for the seven years for similar crimes.

"I hate that kind of stuff happening around here because I've been living here all my life," said South Memphis resident CG Darnell Banks.

Every day dozens of teens walk to and from Booker T. Washington High School, but that walk has become more dangerous in the last two months.

"He is a pervert, he's all that," said Banks.

Police have connected at least two crimes against teenage girls to 35-year-old Floyd. He was arrested on February 15 for kidnapping and raping a teenager on Valentine's Day. Thursday he was charged in a second crime.

The first incident involving a teen happened last December. The teen was walking north on Mississippi Boulevard when she walked right past the man.

That is when she says he came from behind, grabbed her and dragged her up to an abandoned apartment.

The teen started screaming and got the attention of someone nearby. She later identified Floyd in a line-up.

A quick look at Floyd's record revealed several charges, including violation of probation, simple assault, aggravated assault, kidnapping and rape. All with similar patterns: female victims, the use of a knife, and striking victims in the head.

On Friday, Floyd remains in jail, held on a $500 million bond.

Police are still investigating a third sexual assault incident in the area, but have not connected it to this one.
