Polar Plunge to benefit the YMCA

(WMC - TV) - On Saturday, people from across the Mid-South will take the Polar Plunge, a benefit for the YMCA.  It may not sound like your idea of fun in February, but when it comes to raising money for kids, Mid-Southerners answer the call.

Will Albritton works for the YMCA at Schilling Farms in Collierville.

"It's a great way to start our campaign and get everyone excited about the fact that this is really important to the YMCA," said Albritton.

It is important, because this is the only and biggest fundraiser the non-profit organization takes part in.  It helps fund the after and before school activities along with the summer camp.

"The YMCA providers a full day summer camp from 7 a.m. to 6 at night and so again, that cost can be off set, if families qualify," said Albritton.

In 2013, the Y helped almost 200 Mid-South families with fee assistance.  It helped provide childcare and a safe haven for kids from all socio-economic backgrounds.  They also provided a service for many working moms and dads who had no other options for childcare.

"It is just so important because the YMCA is just not for those who can pay for the full services, we're for the whole community," said Albritton.

It's a community that that YMCA has been a part of for nearly 200 years.

The Polar Plunge will take place on Saturday, February 22, at 10:30a.m at the YMCA Schilling Farms in Collierville.
