Time is running out for Westhaven Elementary

(WMC - TV) - Westhaven Elementary is one of 13 Shelby County Schools on the chopping block.

Supporters are rallying to save it, but time is running out.  The decision to close 13 of the schools is expected Tuesday.

Bridget Bradley has been on the front lines, using every minute to make her case to save Westhaven Elementary.

She has called in some heavy hitters to tour the school, one of whom is Shelby County Commissioner Justin Ford.

"I wanted him to see the way the board and the district has let the school deteriorate.  We need a new school," said Bradley.

The Westhaven PTA president has spent months speaking on behalf of the elementary school's students and staff.

She hopes local leaders will share her message with the Shelby County Schools board.

"I went inside a couple of classrooms, asked the kids were they on honor roll or the principal list and to see the joy of them raising their hands was impressive," said Ford.

He is against closing any Shelby County Schools.  Westhaven happens to be in his district.  Supporters say saving Westhaven can save their community.

"We have 15.5 acres here, there's no need to move this school at all," said Bradley.

With only a few days left to make her case, she convinced her county commissioner that Westhaven is worth saving.

"I will assure you this will not happen, this school will not close. We will make sure we exercise every option that we have in this 11th hour.  The battle isn't over until it's finished," said Commissioner Ford.
