(WMC-TV) - Hundreds packed Bolivar's court square Thursday night to remember a man many say was known for his smile, his hard work, and his love for family and friends.

"They're gonna need your prayers," said one Hardeman County resident.

It was a celebration of life, honoring Kilgore employee Michael Chism.

People sang and joined together in spirit to remember this son, husband, and father of eight.

"Every time you'd see him, he had a smile on his face .... always smiling ... never let anything bother him. He was just a nice guy," said Bolivar resident John Foster.

"It's a community thing. I worked at Kilgore for 10 years and it was an important place in my life, and it's an important place in Bolivar's life," said resident Teresa Castleberry.

During the vigil, Michael Chism's parents, wife, and kids poured sand into glass vases to remember him.

At one point during the vigil, his wife Katherine kissed his picture.

"I would have never thought I'd be the one to get that phone call saying it was my husband ...  because my husband was a great worker. He worked his tail off," said Katherine Chism.

Still wearing her husband's wedding ring, Katherine Chism told Action News 5 Kilgore is a dangerous place to work.

"You know that when you accept the job there, but what else is there around here in Bolivar," she said,

And now, the Chism family is asking everyone for prayers as they prepare to lay their loved one to rest.

"He'd do anything for anybody if he had it. He'd go the extra mile to help anybody," said Katherine.

There will be a memorial service for Michael Chism at noon on Saturday, March 1 at Dixie Hills Baptist Church in Bolivar.
