Crawfish could be hard to come by this season

(WMC-TV) - Mud bugs. Crawdads. Crayfish. Crawfish. Call them what you want, but they are in short supply these days in the Mid-South.

It may be prime time crawfish season, but because of the colder temperatures, getting your hands on the popular seafood has been harder than the creature's red shell.

"Worst I've ever seen," said Billy Crumley, who owns Billy's Crawfish. "It's [temperatures] brought it way down, I mean, we're 50 percent cut from what we did last year."

Crawfish hate cold temperatures. Crumley says they hide when the waters are cold. It is usually warm enough by Super Bowl Sunday, but not this year.

"This year we've done like 50 sacks," he said. "Last year, we did 450 sacks, we just couldn't get the bugs."

As a result, prices have gone up almost 40 percent. And that is if you can find them.

The problem is impacting Memphis restaurants.

Crumley got just enough to supply Flying Fish downtown, just in time for a busy time of year for seafood restaurants.

"We get lots of calls for it, asking for it," said John May, Flying Fish. "We're happy that it's finally here prior to lent because next week is Ash Wednesday."

Friday was like Crawfish Christmas for Crumlee and his customers. His Louisiana connection brought him 4,000 pounds.
