Mid-South shoppers prepare for winter weather

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Just the mention of winter weather has Mid-Southerners on the move. From the grocery store to the hardware store, residents are picking up salt, shovels, and other items they will need if the area receives a significant amount of snow.

As rain falls and the threat of wintry weather picks up, salt bags are being stacked. Mid-southerners began loading up on winter weather gear, and taking other steps to deal with a wintry forecast.

"Just making sure we have batteries ready, cell phones are charged up and just staying inside where its warm," said resident, Tom Morris.

People are also thinking about generators. Hopefully you will not need one but keep in mind, when there is severe weather, power sometimes goes out, making things like a generator invaluable.

Mid-Southerners are also stocking up on food in advance of the bad weather. Marlon Lane remembers running low on food during the ice storm back in the mid-1990's. He does not intend on running low this time.

"Well, today we are just out here, man. Trying to pickup a few items to be on the safe side so we won't have to just get out in the bad weather," said Lane.

Humans are not the only ones preparing for the storm. Mid-South pets are also gearing up for winter weather. The Action News 5 team spotted Lucy the poodle wearing a doggie coat to stay warm. Her owner says if the Mid-South gets a lot of cold and snow, Lucy will be ready.

"I mean, when we put the sweater on her she knows she is going to get to go out. So it gets her excited," said Jeffery Krida.

Shoppers who spoke with Action News 5 also said they plan to let their water faucets drip Sunday night and wrap their pipes; good steps to avoid winter weather problems.
