Officials warn drivers of hazardous conditions

(WMC-TV) – The Shelby County Office of Preparedness sent out a warning early Monday morning that driving in the morning will be treacherous.

Ice covers some streets in Shelby County, bridges and overpasses are especially icy.

"Public works crews have spent hours spreading salt and cinders. Yet, it will likely have a minimal effect on icy roads. Drivers should be very careful for the next several hours," said Bob Nations, Director of the Shelby County Office of Preparedness.

Many Mid-South schools and businesses have closed Monday, including Shelby County courts.

Memphis Light, Gas, and Water crews and public works crews are working to clear several downed trees and power lines.

Officials say around 3:30 Monday morning, two trees fell onto homes. One home was in the 3100 block of Northgate Street and the other was in the 3800 block of Townsend Avenue. People inside the homes were not injured.

Officials have a released the following summary of weather-related incidents that happened from 2 p.m. Sunday through 4 a.m. Monday:

• 48 downed trees

• 36 downed power lines

• 27 icy roads

• 13 flooded roads

• 97 traffic crashes investigated by Memphis Police and Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies

• 3 roads closed as of 4 a.m. Monday —Stewart/385, Canada/Memphis-Arlington and Garnett near Independence
