After four days, power still out in MLGW coverage areas

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) – Frayser was hit hard by the winter storm that swept through the Mid-South earlier this week. Some residents are still in the dark, without power as a result.

With no lights and no heat, Shaquille Harris' breath was visible inside his house. He has been without power since Sunday.

"Cold, wrapped up in blankets," said Harris when asked what the past four days have been like for him. "Feet like ice. I just don't know what's taking them so long."

MLGW? Busy with tens of thousands of power outages since the bad weather moved into the area.

"We've been working until 11, 11:30 every night," said Robert Coleman, who has been working 16 hour days with his five-man crew from MLGW. "It's definitely a slow process. We've got people in from out of town helping us, a lot of tree trimming crews. We've got people, you know, we're putting them up as fast as we can, that's for sure."

The main problem is that tree limbs are pulling down the power lines.

On Coleman's stop, 82 customers were given their power back.

"Oh, it was so cold in the house," said Diane Cartwright, whose power was restored. "I couldn't take it, I couldn't. But, now I love it."

She is one of the blessed, says Harris. His girlfriend and 10-month-old baby were sent away to warmth while he waits at home in temperatures so cold he can see them.

City and county officials encourage people without power to check on their neighbors. To report an outage or check on the restoration process, call MLGW at 901-544-6500.
