MLGW estimates winter storm could cost more than $2.8M

(WMC-TV) - Days after a winter storm pummeled the Mid-South, MLGW crews are still working to restore power to an estimated 2,500 customers in the Memphis area. Power is expected to be fully restored in Shelby County Thursday night.

Power remains out in a few Raleigh neighborhoods as crews fix snapped light poles and downed power lines.

"It went out probably about 8 this morning because my cousin works from home and she's not been able to work," said Janice Barnes, who is in town visiting.

Blake Bybee is ready for someone to clear the power lines from his backyard so he can let his dog out again. Somehow, he did not lose power.

"They need to get the lines back up, I've been very lucky in that the power has been on the whole time. Some other people weren't as lucky. I know that, I've heard thousands," he said.

So, how much will the winter storm cost?

Shelby County and Memphis leaders are still adding everything up to see if the area will qualify for state and federal money. First responders overtime and equipment will add up fast.

MLGW says early estimates are that costs are going to be in excess of $2.8 million.

"Just waiting to get the line out of the yard so I can put the dog out there I don't want him to get electrocuted," added Bybee.
