(WMC-TV) - Memphis Light Gas and Water calls a Craigslist ad offering help with utility bills a scam.

It claims to pay off your MLGW bill if you turn over half of what you owe, and it appears to target a specific group of customers.

David Vasquez with La Prensa Latina newspaper called the number in the ad. The entire message is in Spanish and simply says the voicemail is full.

"I think it was a good thing that somebody catch it so we can tell people about it," said Vasquez. "A problem that is happening is that people always try to take advantage of Latinos that don't know the language."

He worries the ad is targeting Spanish-speaking customers.

MLGW is not reducing bills, but they are working with customers to spread out their past due balances.

"They obviously are targeting MLGW customers, and I'm hoping that our customers don't fall for this scam," said Gale Jones-Carson with MLGW. "We certainly would not have an ad on Craigslist."

The full Spanish-speaking voicemail for the fake Craigslist ad has generated some interest and someone could have already been ripped off.

MLGW Spanish-speaking customer representatives can help customers with utility and bill-related questions.

Three ways to pay your bill include visiting MLGW's website, going in person at one of their offices, and paying through the mail with the official statement they send you.
