Mid-South organization remembers 12-year-old's child abuse death

(WMC-TV) – A Mid-South girl who died in a disturbing case of child abuse will be remembered during a Friday morning ceremony at the Memphis Child Advocacy Center.

Andrea Ruth was only 12 years old when she died in Millington on November 24, 2012.

Prosecutors say she suffered from asthma, hypertension, and obesity, but that her family ignored her need for medical care.

She was scheduled to have both legs amputated in May 2011, but no one brought her to that appointment or any other appointment.

Investigators say Andrea passed away from untreated gangrene in her legs.

Her parents, Errol Johnson and Raven Ruth, along with their home care provider, Chasara Jones, are all charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse.

Investigators say Jones knew of Andrea's condition and did not tell police, her agency, or the Department of Children's Services.

This type of neglect is what the Memphis Child Advocacy Center works to prevent.

Friday at 11 a.m., the organization will raise a flag in honor of Andrea. Anyone can attend the ceremony at the Advocacy Center at 1085 Poplar Avenue.
