MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The sudden announcement that Victory University is closing was a heartbreaking blow to baseball coach John Jarnagin.

As soon as Jarnagin heard the news, he asked the school's president if his team could finish out its season, saying the players deserve to see it through.

Jarnagin says even though team will not end up in any championships, they have touched his heart in a way few other teams have.

There are three more games to play, but it costs money to play ball. The team needs $20,000 to cover the costs.

Jarnagin became emotional as he talked about how special the players on the team are this year. He said his 30 years with the team has been about much more than coaching baseball.

"This has been the greatest experience I've ever had with these kids," he said."I can't believe these guys came here and we won 30 games. That's hard, it's hard to do."

Victory University will stay open long enough for seniors to graduate in May.

"Everybody has been touched by this team and by this school, and it looks in the end like a failure but for all of us it was really a success," said senior Shaw Dickerson.

Together Jarnagin and Dickerson learned that true victories are not always reflected on the scoreboard. Jarnagin wants to make good on that promise to his players by coaching for free until the last batter is up.

"They'll believe me that it's true, 'Coach you're right it's about people. It's not about things, people are more important than things,' and that's huge to me," said Jarnagin.

If you would like to help the Eagles with expenses then make checks payable to Victory University. Write "for baseball" in the memo and send them to Victory University C/O Coach John Jarnagin at 225 N Highland Street, Memphis, TN. 38011.
