Marshall County residents rally for sheriff's recovery

(WMC-TV) - Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson is recovering in a Memphis hospital after he was hurt in a wreck in Byhalia, Miss.

The wreck has the entire community worried for Dickerson and Saturday evening, Action News 5 heard from friends and co-workers about the accident.

Tiffany Arcos was working inside AutoZone in Byhalia when she heard something at the intersection of Stonewall Road and Highway 309.

"Sheriff Dickerson he's been our sheriff for a long time since I was a little girl, probably 7 or 8 years old. Everybody loves him in the community, very well respected," said Arcos.

Dickerson was visiting a friend when he was hit on the drivers side of this black car. The truck that struck his vehicle then spun into the ditch.

"It was like logs falling off of a log truck, it was amazing the sound and we come out to see it. They got him out, you could tell people were really sincerely worried about him," added Arcos.

According to Deputy Kelly McMillen, the accident is still under investigation but he notes that Dickerson was hit on the drivers side; resulting in serious injuries.

"One helicopter came and landed in the road and picked up one guy, I think it was the sheriff first. Then I saw the other helicopter land in our parking lot and then they airlifted the gut that was in the truck," said Bailey Lester.

Both drivers suffered serious injuries were airlifted to The MED, as word spread that Sheriff Dickerson was one of the victims.

"I was really worried when they said he was air-lifted to The MED. And I started praying then and other people started calling and we were praying that everything would be okay," said friend of Dickerson, Terry Moore.

Moore has known Sheriff Dickerson for more than 25 years, and she is not alone. Dickerson has worked in law enforcement for almost 40 years, which is why cars lined the sidewalk outside The MED Saturday afternoon.

"Anything he ever worked on he was dedicated and you know," noted Kelly McMillian, a deputy at the sheriff's office.

The entire county is rallying for Dickerson's recovery.

"It effects everybody because, I mean the Sheriff knows everybody and he's got a big family. We've been with him for a long time and worked a lot of cases with him and he's well known, not only in North Mississippi but all over Mississippi and Tennessee," added McMillen.
