SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg police said a man was charged after he collided with a state trooper's patrol vehicle while running.

Officers said they responded to a call to assist the trooper Saturday afternoon, after the suspect ran across four lanes of traffic on Church Street and was nearly hit by vehicles.

The trooper reported that he had seen the suspect lying on the embankment on North Church Street at Memorial Drive and got out of his car to check on the man, later identified as Tyron Woodruff, according to reports.

The trooper said Woodruff appeared to be bleeding from the mouth, and when Woodruff noticed the trooper approaching, he ran off.

Spartanburg officers said they caught up with the suspect on Magnolia Street.

Officers said Woodruff was staggering while he ran, lost his balance several times, and then absentmindedly ran right into the trooper's car that was following him.

EMS was called to the scene and Woodruff refused any treatment, officers said.

When they questioned Woodruff, officers said his speech was slurred and he began jumping, dancing and throwing himself to the ground.

Woodruff reportedly told them he was not on drugs but that he was an artist performing a Buddhist post.

Officers said Woodruff was taken into custody for public disorderly conduct.
